Brent Desruisseaux, Family Lawyer
Brent Desruisseaux is a lawyer with the firm’s Spectrum Family Law Group with a practice focused on family law issues such as guardianship and parenting, child and spousal support, and property rights.
He came to the Spectrum Family Law Group with a wide range of experience. As a law student, Brent volunteered his time with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre and Student Legal Services. After completing his Juris Doctor at the University of Alberta in 2014, he went on to successfully defend his clients’ rights at trial in a variety of family, criminal, and civil matters. He also enjoyed using his negotiation skills to secure separation agreements, settlements, and plea deals that protect his clients’ interests.
The most enjoyable aspect of family law for Brent is the variety of the challenges it presents. No two families are the same, and a broad skillset is necessary in order to tailor the right approach to the unique circumstances of each case. To this end, Brent has become an accredited mediator to add to his existing skills as an experienced litigator.
Memorable cases include helping a father navigate the court system in order to secure the return of his children, who had been wrongfully withheld in another jurisdiction by the other party. In another case, Brent represented a client at trial and obtained the parenting arrangements she was seeking, in the face of strenuous opposition by the other party. Successful examples of his negotiation skills includes persuading the opposing party to consent to his client relocating with their child, thereby avoiding the stress and expense of contesting the matter in court.
Brent volunteers his time at the Edmonton Community Centre to give summary legal advice to the low-income community. He is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Family Section.
Brent understands that going through a separation is stressful and challenging. He looks forward to using his expertise to guide you through a difficult time and secure a fair result. Please call the Spectrum Family Law Group to arrange for a consultation on your family law matter.
